Finasteride is a medication commonly used to treat male pattern baldness by reducing levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair follicle shrinkage. However, during the early months of treatment, some users experience increased hair loss, known as finasteride shedding. This is actually normal and temporary — a sign that the medication is beginning to work.
Finasteride affects the natural hair growth cycle. When DHT is reduced, hair follicles that were in a resting or shedding phase (telogen) may rapidly transition to the active growth phase (anagen). As a result, old hairs are shed to make way for new, healthier ones. This sudden change may cause a short-term increase in hair loss.
You might notice double the usual daily hair loss — 100–200 hairs a day — especially if you’re also using minoxidil. This is usually temporary and part of the regrowth process.
Finasteride shedding is a common, temporary part of the hair restoration process. Stick with the treatment, and you’ll likely see healthier, fuller hair in the long run. If shedding continues past the usual timeline, it’s worth checking in with a healthcare provider to rule out other causes.
